Here are answers to general questions about Connected.

The Connected web application supports the following browsers from any computer:

  • Chrome 125 or later
  • Firefox 127 or later
  • Microsoft Edge 125 or later
  • Safari 17 or later

Connected Agents support macOS or Windows-based computers.

The installation packages that install Agent software are relatively small. Windows-based Agent installation packages are about 10 MB in size, and macOS-based ones are about 6 MB.

NOTE: To install the Agent, you must use a computer account with local administrator privileges.

macOS

Agent requirements for macOS-based computers:

  • Hardware requirements:

    • Memory (RAM). 2 GB (minimum)

    • Processor. Intel, Apple Silicon (macOS 13 and above)

    • Disk space. 250 MB

  • Software requirements:

    • Operating system. For details, see Compatibility matrix below.

Windows

Agent requirements for Windows-based computers:

  • Hardware requirements:

    • Memory (RAM). 2 GB (minimum)

      NOTE: Microsoft’s recommendations supersede the recommendation listed here.

    • Processor. See the Microsoft Windows documentation

    • Disk space: 250 MB plus an additional 5-10% free disk space on each NTFS volume to support open file backup with Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS)

  • Software requirements:

    • Operating system. For details, see Compatibility matrix below.

    • Microsoft OS updates:

      IMPORTANT: The Agent requires these updates for installation or upgrade. Without them, new installations fail and upgrades retain the current version of the Agent.

      • KB3033929 - Microsoft security update. (Windows 7 only)

        Computers running Windows 7 require this security update to verify the Agent's filter driver, which is signed by a SHA-2 certificate. Computers that automatically update Windows software should have this update installed already. For all other Windows 7 computers, install this update before installing or upgrading the Agent to version 4.0.5 or later. For more information about this update, see Microsoft Security Advisory 3033929.

      • KB2999226 - Update for Universal C Runtime (CRT) in Windows. (Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1)

        The Agent uses the CRT to provide Connected status badges on items in your sync folder and right-click Agent menu options in Windows Explorer to manage backups. Windows 10 includes the CRT by default; earlier versions do not. For information about this CRT update, including how to install it, see Update for Universal C Runtime in Windows.

      TIP: Windows 7 only
      Microsoft’s security update KB4015549 is an important monthly quality rollup for Windows 7 that contains the software installed by both KB3033929 and KB2999226. Computers that automatically update Windows software should have this update installed already. For all other Windows 7 computers, install this update before installing or upgrading the Agent. For information about this critical update, see KB4015549.

    • Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS).

      VSS installed and enabled

    • Microsoft User State Migration Tool (USMT) — Optional (Agent 4.9.0 and later)

      If your backup policy allows, Connected can import Windows user state (.mig) files automatically after restoring them. To do so, the computer must have USMT installed. If installed outside of the default install path, the USMT location must be defined by the Windows PATH environment variable.

      TIP: To determine if Connected can automatically import Windows user state data for you, check whether the Windows admin rules for your policy have the Back up Windows user state files (.mig) option enabled. To access your policy's rules, click your name in the upper-right corner of the web application, click My Profile, and then click the Admin Rules tab.

    • Browser.

      Agents opens the default web browser and loads the Connected login page for Connected credentials.

    • Ports. Two free local TCP/IP ports: one port with a number from 7777 through 7787 and the other from 7788 through 7798

The profile page of the Connected web application provides statistics about your Connected files. Charts on this page display the distribution of your files by size, date modified, and file group. You can view detailed information about a particular section of a distribution chart by pointing to it. For example, pointing to a specific segment in the By Size chart reveals the percentage of your files with that size.

The following charts display statistics about your files:

  • By Size chart. The distribution of files grouped by the following sizes:

    • Tiny. 0 < size ≤ 5 KB

    • Small. 5 KB < size ≤ 2 MB

    • Medium. 2 MB < size ≤ 50 MB

    • Large. 50 MB < size ≤ 1 GB

    • Larger. 1 GB < size

  • By Date Modified chart. The distribution of files grouped by when they were last modified:

    • One Day Old. Modified within the last 24 hours.

      For example, suppose you run the report on August 31st at 10:00 a.m. This group contains files modified between August 30th at 10:00 a.m. and August 31st at 10:00 a.m.

    • One Week Old. Modified within the previous 6 days.

      For the current example, this group contains files modified between August 24th at 10:00 a.m. and August 30th at 10:00 a.m.

    • One Month Old. Starting one week ago, modified within the past 23 days. (All reports assume 30 days per month, regardless of the month.)

      For the current example, this group contains files modified between August 1st at 10:00 a.m. and August 24th at 10:00 a.m.

    • Older. Modified earlier than a month ago.

      For the current example, this group contains all files modified earlier than August 1st at 10:00 a.m.

  • By File Group chart. The distribution of files grouped by the following categories (based on file extension):

    • Audio. AA, AIF, AIFF, CDA, IFO, MID, MP1, MP2, MP3, M4A, M4P, MPE, MUS, RA, RAM, WAV, WMA

    • Compressed. ARC, CAB, GZ, JAR, RAR, SIT, TAR, ZIP

    • Data. 123, CSV, FP, FPT, GMB, IML, REP, VSC, VSD, VSS, VST, VSW, WDB, WK1, WK3, WK4, WKS, WPS, WQ1

    • Document. PDF, JSD, MSG, RTF, TXT, WBK

    • Email. DBX, FOL, ILM, MBX, NSF, PAB, PST, REP, TOC, WAB

TIP: To access your profile page, in the upper-right corner of the Connected web application, click your name, and then click My Profile.

It depends on which Connected application you use:

  • Connected web application. Enforces the following size limits:

    • File view or print. As follows:

      • PDF files. 100 MB
      • MP4 files. 100 MB

      • Programming-related files. 10 MB 

        The Connected web application highlights the syntax of most programming-related files.

    • Folder download. Downloaded as a .zip file with the following limits, depending on the type of data:

      • Backup.

        • No limit

        Note that attempting to download folders containing a very large number of items over a slow internet connection might cause the download process to timeout and fail. If this occurs, select fewer items and attempt the download again.

      • Sync.

        Collaboration.

        • Maximum size of contents (uncompressed): 10 GB
        • Maximum number of files and folders, including the folder selected: 100
        • Maximum number of nested folder levels: 5

        If you try to download a folder that exceeds any of these limits, the application displays a message. Adjust your selection accordingly, and then try to download the folder again. For example, if the message indicates that your selection exceeds the supported number of nested folder levels, try selecting a folder that is located one or more levels below the folder currently selected.
