Migration overview

Connected lets you migrate your backed up data between two computers. The migration process reassigns Connected data associated with one computer to another. Therefore, if you replace a registered computer, you can migrate its Connected data to your new computer so that you retain access to it.

You can migrate your data yourself, or your Connected data administrator can do it for you. For information, see Migrate your Connected data or Migrate a user's Connected data. If you perform the migration yourself, starting the process is automatic and straightforward. The first time you log in to the Agent after installing it, the Agent determines whether your computer is registered with Connected. If you reinstall or upgrade the Agent, your computer retains its registration, and the Agent starts as usual. However, if you get a new computer or reinstall the operating system on your current one, the Agent detects that the computer is not registered. In this case, the Agent automatically prompts you to choose how to register it—either as a new Connected device or a replacement of an existing one.

If you choose to register the computer as a new device, the Agent registers it and starts to process files as usual. However, if you choose to replace an existing device, the Agent performs device migration, which does the following:

  • Registers the new computer with your Connected profile

  • Lets you choose which computer to replace and reassigns its backup set to the new computer

This process reassigns the backup set to the new device but does not restore files to the new computer. To restore files, you must create a restore request.

  • Transfers any user-created rules associated with the old computer to the new one

  • Deactivates the Agent on the old computer so that it no longer backs up or syncs files

If your old computer is still operational, the first time you log on to it after migration, the Agent starts automatically but quits after you sign in to it. After that, it no longer automatically starts when you log on to the computer. If you start the Agent manually and sign in, it displays a message to let you know that the device was deleted, and then closes.

  • Deletes the old computer from your profile

The system permanently deletes the old computer from your profile, which removes your and your data administrator's access to it from other Connected applications.

Connected sends you an email confirmation when migration completes. If you performed the migration yourself, the Agent immediately starts processing files according to its regular startup routine by first syncing any Connected files with your computer. Otherwise, if a data administrator performed migration for you, the Agent starts processing files the first time you log in to it on your new computer. If a restore request was initiated for your data, the Agent then restores files from Connected; otherwise, you can restore files at a later time. Finally, the Agent scans the computer for files to back up during its next backup interval. If the data administrator restored files for you, the Agent synchronizes the file attributes of these items during its first backup.
