Manually edit an exported backup policy
Although you can reimport a policy file as-is and then edit it through the Connected web application, you might find it easier to make some edits manually before reimporting it. The following list identifies the types of manual changes you can make to a policy:
-
Update the policy's name and description
-
Add, update, or remove custom rules
-
Remove predefined file groups
-
Include or exclude rules
-
Lock or unlock rules
-
Adjust the priority of rules
-
Update backup settings, which control the scope and generation of backups and the access to content in them
Connected supports setting a policy's scope and adding or updating predefined file groups only through the web app.
Before you begin
Backup policies consist of many different components. To ensure that your policies meet your specific backup requirements, it is important to know how key policy components work and interact with each other. For information to help you better understand backup policies, see the following topics:
In addition, keep in mind that Agents apply policies based on a file’s extension not its binary signature.
To edit a backup policy file
-
Make a copy of the file so you can revert to it if necessary.
-
Edit the policy file using either a text editor or an XML editor.
For information about the policy's schema that can help you modify it, see Backup policy XML schema reference.
-
(Recommended) Validate the modified file against the policy file's XSD using a third-party tool.
Connected validates the policy during import but displays only the first error it encounters. Third-party validation tools provide the complete list of any errors, which quickens the validation and correction process. To create a local copy of the XSD file, open it in a browser, and then save it to a file. You can access the XSD file from the server that hosts your Connected environment:
After editing (and optionally validating) the file, you can import it into Connected.
