User overview

Connected supports several types of user roles, each with permission to perform different types of functions. The following list identifies these roles from highest to lowest rank:

  • Data Admin ( data admin icon ). A data administrator who can access and migrate the data of any user in your company. This person can also manage groups and users, create policies, and run reports for any group in your company. Additionally, a Data Admin can perform typical User functions on their own files.
  • Admin ( admin icon ). An administrator who can manage groups and lower-ranked users (except Group Data Admins), create policies, and run reports for any group in your company. An Admin can also perform typical User functions on their own files.
  • Support ( customer support icon ). An administrator who can view groups, users, and policies, and who can run reports for any group in your company. This view-only permission on Connected information helps the Support user investigate and resolve end-user issues. A Support user can also perform typical User functions on their own files.

  • Support Restore ( ). A special type of role with permission to manage restores for lower-ranked users in your company and can also perform typical User functions on their own files. This person can run reports for any group in your company.

  • Support Technician ( ). A special type of role with permission to manage groups, users and restores for users within their customer. This person can create new users with Role as User and can edit basic information, phone number, and email of the users except for the Group and Role. This person can also view and restore the data, and run reports. They cannot delete groups or users, preview or download data of users in the hierarchy.

  • Bulk Exporter ( bulk exporter icon ). A special type of administrator with permission only to run the ExportData tool. Using this tool, a Bulk Exporter can export the Connected data of any user in your company.

  • Bulk Importer ( bulk importer icon ). A special type of administrator with permission only to run the ImportUsers tool. Using this tool, a Bulk Importer can create and delete Connected end users. They can also manage the group, status, or personal information of any user in your company regardless of role.

  • Group Data Admin ( group data admin icon ). A data administrator who can access and migrate the data of lower-ranked users in their own group or any of its subgroups. Within this same scope, this person can also manage groups and lower-ranked users, create policies, and run reports. Additionally, a Group Data Admin can perform typical user functions on their own files.
  • Group Admin ( group admin icon ) . An administrator who can manage groups and lower-ranked users, create policies, and run reports for their own group or any of its subgroups. A Group Admin can also perform typical user functions on their own files.
  • Group Support Restore ( ). A special type of role with permission to manage restores for lower-ranked users in a group or subgroup and can also perform typical User functions on their own files. This person can also run restore assets report for the lower-ranked users in his group and subgroup.
  • Group Support Technician ( ). A special type of role with permission to manage groups or subgroups, users and restores for users within their group. This person can edit basic information of users and groups but cannot delete groups or users.
  • User ( user icon ). An end user who can sync, share, collaborate on, and back up and restore files.

By default, your Connected environment contains one Data Admin assigned to a predefined group. Although you can manage your entire corporate environment with this administrator, you should create other administrators to allow several people to share management duties. Additionally, you must create standard users for the people in your company that need access to the system.

You can create users one at a time through the Connected web application or you can import many users at one time using the ImportUsers tool. For information about how to create users individually, see Create a user. To learn how to use the ImportUsers tool, see the ImportUsers Tool Help Center, available on the the Connected documentation site.

TIP: To learn how Connected controls administrative roles to ensure that only the appropriate set of authorized people can access user data, see Your span of administrative control.
